Mexicans suspected in death of DHS agent extradited to U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security announced Tuesday that two suspects in the murder of a DHS special agent in 2011 have been extradited to the U.S.

Special Agent Jaime Jorge Zapata of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations was killed on Feb. 15, 2011, near Mexico City, Mexico. Zapata was in an armored vehicle that was attacked by members of a Mexican drug cartel, an act that wounded another agent.

Deputy DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas congratulated ICE officials for the extradition of the two men to the U.S.

“Jesus Ivan Quezada Pina and Alfredo Gaston Mendoza Hernandez, both Mexican citizens and nationals, were the subjects of a federal arrest warrant and will stand trial in the United States District Court for the District of Colombia,” Mayorkas said. “Law enforcement partners from the government of Mexico located Quezada and Mendoza and notified the FBI office in Mexico City.”

Mayorkas noted that the apprehension happened just before National Police Week, and “is the latest affirmation of Homeland Security Investigations’ skill and commitment to bringing criminals to face justice.”
