A soldier who grew up in Manassas was killed by insurgents this week in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense said in a statement that Spc. Sean R. Cutsforth, 22, died Dec. 15 in Ghazni Province from injuries he suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with small-arms fire.
Cutsforth joined the Army in September 2008 and was assigned to Company C, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based out of Fort Campbell, Ky.
Cutsforth graduated from Brentsville District High School. He was on baseball, swimming and football teams in high school and in youth sports leagues.
Cutsforth’s family told the News and Messenger that his wife, Ashley, was pregnant with the couple’s first child. They were married two years ago, the newspaper reported.
His remains were returned to Dover Air Force Base on Saturday.
