Afghan soldier kills 3 American troops

An Afghan soldier shot and killed three American soldiers in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday, according to the Pentagon.

Earlier in the day a spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar province said an Afghan soldier turned on American soldiers Saturday, killing two and wounding two others, according to the Associated Press. The Afghan was killed following the attack.

It’s the second such attack this year. Three Americans were wounded after an Afghan soldier turned on them and opened fire in March. Such attacks were commonplace earlier on in the decade, but had decreased in recent years.

The surviving U.S. soldier has been evacuated for medical treatment. The Defense Department said next of kin notification is underway.

President Trump has been briefed on the “emerging situation in Afghanistan,” according to NBC News.

The deadly incident is under investigation, the DoD said.
