The Virginia State Board of Electionsis investigating whether voters were interfered with outside a Prince William County voting site last week during campaigns dominated by the illegal-immigration debate.

Prince William County General Registrar Betty Weimer said someone complained people were bothering voters outside Stonewall Middle School in Manassas during the afternoon and evening.

“I received a complaint, and I passed it on to the state board, and they’re looking into it,” Weimer said. “All I can say is it’s under investigation.”

Even though the alleged incidents took place beyond the restricted area of 40 feet outside the polling center, the conduct could have been considered illegal, Weimer said.

The reported intimidation was of Hispanic residents, who were told they could face penalties if voting illegally.

There were tensions Nov. 6 between people trying to help Hispanic voters record their ballot choices and others passing out sample ballots, said Alanna Almeda, who was at the site.

Anti-illegal-immigration leader Greg Letiecq of Help Save Manassas said he had heard of the reports but was not aware of what happened and wanted to see the query play out.
