Sledders made a triumphant return to the West Front of the U.S. Capitol on Saturday, as up to two feet of snow blanketed the D.C.-Metro region this weekend.
It marked the first time since 2001 that people could lawfully take to the slopes at Capitol Hill. Last year protesters held a “sled-in” on Capitol Hill, and Capitol Police neglected to enforce the ban.
When Congress passed the 2016 omnibus spending package last year, it included language that ended the 15-year-old ban that upset many local residents, who view the West Front as a prime sledding spot.
Despite a memo from U.S. Capitol Police on Thursday warning that officers may “limit” sledding and other snow-related activities on Capitol Hill if weather conditions become too dangerous, pictures and videos posted on social media indicate that sledders are out in force.
