If the Left has accomplished anything, it’s convincing many people that any logo with Native American imagery or symbolism is racist — even if such art is meant to honor them. It was the case with the Cleveland Indians, Marquette Warriors, and Washington Redskins logos. Now, apparently, such is the case with the state seal of Massachusetts, which features an indigenous man holding an arrow in one hand and a bow in the other. Earlier this week, a state commission voted to recommend replacing the seal because of its alleged offensiveness.
Opponents of the flag have labeled it the “last state flag of white supremacy.” It’s typical hyperbolic left-wing outrage. It’s also an ignorant statement, given that it was under the symbol of a Native American that Union troops fought to defeat actual white supremacy during the Civil War. Such assertions are even more ridiculous considering that Massachusetts was one of the first states to have a regiment of black troops who fought in the Army, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. But, like some kind of cult, to the Left, the facts of history don’t matter.
“This is the flag that crushed the Confederacy, and now to say that it’s a racist symbol — I’m not buying it,” retired Brig. Gen. Leonid Kondratiuk told the Boston Globe. “Seventeen-thousand Massachusetts soldiers died fighting under that flag.”
And while the imagery was meant to honor Native Americans, the flag is controversial because it features an arm holding a sword located above the Native American as if ready to strike. Many have claimed this celebrates the genocide of Native Americans. Any rational person should understand that a state seal would not commemorate the slaughter of any group, but leftists routinely operate in an alternate reality of a constant state of grievances.
The flag has nothing to do with the Native American genocide, of course. The state seal was designed by Edmund Garrett in 1898. It was inspired by the original seal of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1629, which contained an image of a Native American holding an arrow pointed downward in a peaceful manner while saying, ‘Come over and help us,’ a reference to the “original colonists’ missionary and commercial intentions.”
The United States is the freest and greatest country in the world’s history, except for the left-wing intelligentsia that live here. If any imagery doesn’t adhere to their ideas of a utopia, it is deemed offensive. They will look to continue this trend until all images of our country’s founding are entirely removed — whether it is statues of Confederate soldiers or of our Founding Fathers. Replacing the state seal of Massachusetts is just the latest attempt to delegitimize American history.
