Air Force Gen. Lori Robinson will be nominated to serve as the first female head of a combatant command, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Friday morning.
Carter said Robinson, who is commander of Pacific Air Forces, will be tapped to take over U.S. Northern Command. That command is based in Colorado and is responsible for homeland defense.
“We have coming along now a lot of female officers who are exceptionally strong,” Carter said at a Politico Playbook event.
Robinson has served as an Air Force officer since 1982 after graduating from the University of New Hampshire. She took over the job leading Pacific Air Forces in 2014, becoming the first female four-star to command combat forces, Defense News reported.
