Jerry Nadler opens door to impeaching Barr

Attorney General William Barr may face an impeachment investigation after all.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said on Wednesday his panel “may very well” pursue the impeachment of Barr, whom Democrats have accused of politicizing the Justice Department.

“We’re looking into that,” the New York Democrat said, according to CNN, following a hearing on DOJ oversight.

Over the weekend, Nadler told CNN that it would be a “waste of time and effort” to try and impeach Barr in the middle of an election year and with Republicans in control of the Senate.

Asked what changed his mind, Nadler said on Wednesday, “I think the weight of the evidence and of what’s [happened] leads to that conclusion.”

Nadler said this after the hearing in which DOJ officials testified about the alleged politicization of the Justice Department. Rep. Steve Cohen, a Tennessee Democrat, said, “We should pursue impeachment of Bill Barr because he is reigning terror on the rule of law.”

Barr has agreed to testify in front of the House Judiciary Committee on July 28 for a “general oversight hearing,” according to DOJ spokeswoman Kerri Kupec.

President Trump was impeached by the Democratic-led House in December on two charges stemming from an investigation related to Ukraine. He was acquitted by the GOP-controlled Senate in February.
