Two large figures in conservative politics, Newt Gingrich and Rupert Murdoch, called on establishment Republicans Sunday to stop attacking Republican front-runner Donald Trump.
“Both ‘establishment’ Republicans and Trump need to cool it and close ranks to fight real enemy,” Murdoch tweeted Sunday. “Trump, Rubio, Kasich could all win general.”
The billionaire is the owner of the Wall Street Journal and Fox News, cornerstones of the American movement conservative market.
Gingrich, the House speaker and 2012 presidential candidate, also urged critics to ease up on Trump after he failed to denounce the Ku Klux Klan and its former leader, David Duke, during an appearance on CNN Sunday.
Gingrich argued Trump had already repudiated the white supremacist group.
“Any media effort to suggest Trump has not disavowed David Duke is just wrong. He has clearly disavowed the racist. News media should move on,” Gingrich tweeted.
“‘(@realDonaldTrump)2/28/16, 12:35 PM As I stated at the press conference on Friday regarding David Duke- I disavow’ Should be clear enough,” Gingrich added.
Gingrich differs from his 2012 rival Mitt Romney, who has called on Trump to release his tax information, as both Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have.
