Secret Service sent to southern border

U.S. Secret Service personnel have been sent to the U.S.-Mexico border to handle migrants attempting to enter the U.S.

The Homeland Security Department has already sent some officers and plans to send more soon, according to a Homeland Security document obtained by the Daily Beast. The plan was created after then-Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen requested each unit of the agency recruit volunteers that would be shipped to the southern border.

Homeland Security did not deny that Secret Service personnel had already been sent to the border or that more would be dispatched.

“As we have consistently said, the Department is considering all options to address the humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border,” a Homeland Security spokesperson told the Daily Beast.

“We will continue to work with our workforce to find dynamic solutions and funding to address this very serious problem,” the spokesperson said. “As part of this effort, it is our responsibility to explore fiscal mechanisms that will ensure the safety and welfare of both our workforce and the migrant population, which is also reflected in the supplemental request submitted to Congress.”

The agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Washington Examiner.
