Paul Manafort to remain jailed

Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort will remain jailed pending trial.

Manafort’s defense team had asked the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals last month to order his release in advance of his two upcoming criminal trials, where he faces charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.

The federal appeals court denied the motion Thursday afternoon.

The judge overseeing the case against Manafort in Washington, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, had ordered him jailed on June 15 due to allegations of attempted witness tampering.

Manafort faces trial in Virginia on July 25 and goes on trial in Washington on Sept. 17. The 69-year-old faces charges of money laundering, failing to register as a foreign lobbyist, and witness tampering in Washington and charges of tax evasion and bank fraud in Virginia.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

U.S. District Court Judge T.S. Ellis III, who will oversee the trial in the Eastern District of Virginia, issued an order Wednesday requiring that Manafort be transferred to a detention facility in Alexandria, Va., from the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Va.

Manafort’s lawyers had originally asked for the transfer last week, lamenting about his treatment, but then withdrew the request on Tuesday.

Manafort arrived was booked at Alexandria Detention Center mid-afternoon after being checked out of the Northern Neck facility at 12:32 a.m.

“Mr. Manafort’s arrival and booking process were routine,” Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne said in a statement. “Because he is a high-profile inmate, Mr. Manafort will be placed in protective custody which limits his interactions with other inmates. Specific details about Mr. Manafort’s confinement will not be made public due to security and privacy concerns. We will work closely with the U.S. Marshals to ensure his proper care while he remains in our custody.”

In a Wednesday court filing, prosecutors Mueller said Manafort was being treated like a “VIP” in the Northern Neck prison.
