An adult female was found dead in an apartment fire in Southwest Washington, D.C. fire officials said.

Around 6:15 a.m. Friday, firefighters responded to a report of a building fire at 1422 1st Street SW, and found smoke coming from a first floor apartment, said D.C. fire spokesman Pete Piringer.

Firefighters encountered fire in the bedroom, as as they were extinguishing it, found the dead woman on the bed, Piringer said.

The fire was contained to the one apartment, and the woman is believed to be the lone occupant.

D.C. fire and police are investigating how the fire started. They have not released the name of the woman.
