Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s partner Suzanne Malveaux exits CNN

Suzanne Malveaux, CNN anchor and former White House Correspondent, announced on Friday that she will be leaving the network after 20 years to “explore new opportunities” and to focus on her family.

“After 20 years of delivering groundbreaking stories for the audiences of CNN, I’ve made the heartfelt decision to put myself and my family first and to pursue my long-desired professional passions: using storytelling to promote wellness, resiliency and social justice,” Malveaux wrote in a memo to CNN colleagues. “I will forever be grateful for the opportunities CNN afforded me.”

Malveaux is the longtime partner of openly gay White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, with whom she shares an 8-year-old daughter.

When Jean-Pierre assumed the new role at the White House in May, CNN said that Malveaux would not cover “politics, Capitol Hill, or the White House while Karine Jean-Pierre is serving as White House Press Secretary” amid questions of having a possible conflict of interest. White House counsel also had the press secretary sign a waiver in order to allow her to have a working relationship with CNN.

“While I’ve thrived on the energy from covering breaking news and politics, the rhythm of my life has shifted to the more personal,” wrote the outgoing CNN correspondent.

She added, “I love being a mom, and the time I have with my eight-year-old daughter is priceless. I am so thankful that my mother and daughter had a chance to develop a beautiful relationship before she passed.”

She told the CNN staff that the pandemic made her reevaluate her priorities.

“There is nothing like being quarantined in your basement to help one gain some momentum from contemplating to actually exploring what lies ahead,” she said.

Malveaux detailed one of her “new opportunities” as a collaboration with the great-grandson of Nelson Mandela.

In early December, hundreds of CNN staff members were laid off to help with cost-cutting but a CNN spokesperson said that her “departure is unrelated.”
