A taste of the Mediterranean is coming to Annapolis.
Kyma, a new contemporary restaurant offering Mediterranean cuisine will open its doors July 5 in the inner West Street area of downtown Annapolis.
“We were contacted by the owner of the building who we had an affiliation with,” said Oren Molovinsky, the restaurant?s area general manager.
“They took us on a tour of Annapolis and showed us some the of the restaurants and new development going on. We decided we would able to elevate the level of service of the restaurant community in Annapolis and set a new standard.”
The restaurant, which cost more than $2 million to bring on line, will feature modern versions of classic Greek and Spanish cuisine such as mezes and tapas. For many of its dishes, the restaurant will use fresh ingredients from the Chesapeake region.
“The concept and the cuisine is Greek and Spanish mezes and tapas, which are very popular right now, but were using ingredient indigenous to the Chesapeake region,” Molovinsky said.
“While the flavors will be reminiscent of the Mediterranean, the ingredients will be from the Chesapeake.”
The restaurant will also offer an extensive wine list featuring 50 wines by the bottle and 11 wines by the glass, as well specialty regional, domestic and imported bottled beers and boutique domestic and European spirits.
“I think the influx of a lot more international-influenced restaurants is an indicator of the diversity that the hospitality industry has to offer and it seems to be a very successful concept right now,” said Licia Spinelli, director of marketing and special events at the Maryland Restaurant Association. “I?m looking forward to trying them myself once they open.”
Meanwhile, the look of the restaurant, which is in a 200-year-old building, also will be Mediterranean-themed with white planes, blue-tiled walls and backlit etched acrylic panels positioned against dark woods and newly exposed brick walls. It will also feature and an open kitchen with wood-burning stove. Architects Adamstein & Demetriou created the restaurant?s design.
“We think Annapolis is definitely ready for a restaurant of this caliber,” Molovinsky said. “We feel we?re in the right market, with the right product, at the right time.”
Jack Boyle, who has owned restaurants in the Washington area for more than 30 years, is the owner of Kyma.
