Lieberman for SecDef?

Redstate reports on the McCain conference call this morning, where one commenter, who was also on the call, writes:

The Senator is right now saying that Lieberman should “play a role” in national security issues. That sounds like a possible SecDef to me.

Despite all the talk of Lieberman as a possible VP in a McCain administration, this would seem like a more realistic scenario. Although I’m not sure Secretary Gates has any plans for leaving the Pentagon regardless of who wins the election come Novemeber–after all, the guy has exceeded all expectations and kept a spectacularly low profile since he replaced Rumsfeld. It might not be so far fetched to think that a President Obama would be just as likely to keep him on for a year or two as a President McCain. Why fix it if it ain’t broke?
