Eastern Market project getting pushback

Residents who live across from a proposed mixed-use development near Eastern Market say they have some better ideas for the development they say will hurt the neighborhood’s character.

The neighbors, “Eyes on Hine,” have written their Advisory Neighborhood Commission planning and zoning committee to request specific design changes to the Hine Development, which calls for a mix of office space, retail and residences on the site of a shuttered junior high.

Objections include the building’s size (“a mammoth building filling much of the block with an unbroken façade”), the four-story bay windows and lack of additional “open space.”

The development does include a plaza for additional outdoor vendors associated with nearby Eastern Market.
