GoFundMe freezes $4.7 million in funds for protest of Canada’s vaccine mandate

Funds raised for a trucker convoy headed to protest Canada‘s vaccine mandate in Ottawa are being frozen by a crowdfunding site.

GoFundMe has frozen over $4.7 million in donations raised for the “Freedom Convoy 2022” page, to which more than 60,000 donors have contributed. The money is frozen until the company verifies how the funds will be distributed, GoFundMe spokeswoman Rachel Hollis told the Washington Examiner.

VACCINE MANDATE AT CANADIAN BORDER COULD COST CONSUMERS

“This is part of our standard process to ensure the protection of donors,” Hollis said. “Once a withdrawal plan is provided by the organizer, our team is on standby to safely and quickly deliver the funds.”

The page states the funds will be disbursed to truckers to go toward fuel expenses and “assist with food if needed and contribute to shelter.”

The truckers are headed to the country’s capital in opposition to a mandate that took effect on Jan. 15, requiring all essential cross-border workers to show proof of vaccination at ports of entry.

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters called on Canada and the United States to delay vaccination mandates on Dec. 17, arguing in a statement the measure would “dramatically worsen current supply chain disruptions” in North America.
