Although she failed to reach the White House on her own merit, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren is hopeful of putting her stamp on a potential Joe Biden Oval Office.
According to three “Democratic officials” who spoke with Politico under the condition of anonymity on Friday, the Massachusetts progressive will pitch herself for the vacant secretary of Treasury position should Biden claim victory on Election Day.
“She wants it,” one of the officials reportedly said.
But Warren spokeswoman Kristen Orthman pivoted away from the question when reached by journalists to confirm.
“It’s five days out, we’re focused on the election and encourage everyone else to be as well,” Kristen Orthman said.
Opponents of the idea suggest Warren has limited experience with financial markets in spite of her background in economics. Allies of the former Democratic presidential candidate dismissed any inexperience Warren might have by pointing out she found some bipartisan support while setting up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Warren’s nomination to the position might spook fear in the financial sector, though, as analysts worry she could institute harsh regulations on the industry. In September of 2019, then-candidate Warren said she “approved” a video clip of market commentator Jim Cramer arguing that Wall Street executives were “afraid” of a potential Warren presidency.
Should Warren take on a role in a potential Biden administration, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker would be tasked with fielding her replacement.
