GOP Rep. Blake Farenthold says there are “probably” enough votes in the House to impeach Obama

If the House of Representatives wanted to impeach President Barack Obama, there would “probably” be enough votes to do so, according to Rep. Blake Farenthold (R-Texas).

Farenthold was in Luling, Texas on Saturday, participating in a open house with constituents, as BuzzFeed reported. He was asked a question about potential legislation to investigate Obama’s birth certificate — which he promised to “take a look at it” — before supplying the information about the chances for impeaching Obama.

“You tie into a question I get a lot: ‘If everybody’s so unhappy with what the president’s doing, why don’t you impeach him?'” Farenthold told the woman asking the question.

He then proceeded to give her a “real frank answer” on that issue.

“If we were to impeach the President tomorrow, you could probably get the votes in the House of Representatives to do it, but it would go to the Senate and he wouldn’t be convicted,” he explained.

Farenthold then referenced former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, saying that the result proved “it’s ok to lie to Congress” and had “actually damaged the country.”

“What message do we sent to America if we impeach Obama and he gets away with what he’s impeached for and is found innocent?” the Congressman asked. “What do we say then is OK? Aside from the fact that it wouldn’t be effective, I think there’s some potential damage to society that would be done with a failed attempt at impeachment.”
