Congress plays ball … literally

Sure, the debt limit battle is riveting, but folks interested in seeing their reps duke out their differences in a fun way should check out this year’s Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game. The first pitch goes out Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Nats Park, and this year’s fight for the coveted trophy marks the event’s 50th anniversary.

Democrats have won the past two games of the five-game series, and Democratic manager Rep. Mike Dole is hoping to snag a third consecutive victory with rookie freshman Rep. Cedric Richmond, who played college baseball and might take over as starting pitcher — but there are 23 new players joining the returning members, and Republican manager Rep. Joe Barton has numbers on his side. The GOP team is twice the size of the Democrats’ 21-player roster, and they may have a secret weapon in Rep.Lou Barletta, who played AAA ball in his youth.

Tickets are $10 and are available online and at the stadium on game night. All proceeds will go to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the Washington Literacy Council.
