Zim eyes more accolades; Teddy gets degraded, again; and talking turkey

Just posting up some of the latest Nats info. Wish we had more to report on the actual on-the-field product, but maybe in a few weeks?

Vote for “This Year in Baseball Awards”

Nats 3B Ryan Zimmerman is a nominee for defensive player of the year.

You can vote for him here. Would be another nice piece to Zim’s postseason awards collection.

And in an interesting move, the Nats are promoting the Pierogi-Presidents race debacle in the Oddity of the Year nominations, further making us wonder how much of a conspiracy there is against Teddy — they won’t let him win and they are OK with promoting his pounding.

As great a president as the Rough Rider was, his comments on baseball, or “base ball” as it was spelled back then, weren’t always the best. He referred to sport as a “mollycoddle game.” Perhaps the revenge for those comments are being levied a century later?

I do wish we could nominate former GM Jim Bowden as executive of the year. He managed to sign Adam Dunn, then got out of the way so the team could move forward. Well, maybe that last part wasn’t voluntary, but it sure worked out well in the end.

More Zim accolades

Zimmerman was one of 10 athletes being honored by All Stars Helping Kids as part of their “Dream Team for Public Service” for his work around the D.C. area. The winners will be officially recognized in a ceremony in New York City on Dec. 8.

The “Dream Team” was selected from 53 athletes nominated from 10 sports for the Jefferson Awards for Public Service. Other team members include Detroit’s Curtis Granderson, NBA stars Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki and NFL All-Pro Justin Tuck.

The top two vote-getters on the team will be honored at the 2010 Jefferson Awards for Public Service in D.C. on June 22.

Thanksgiving help

Recuperating pitcher Craig Stammen helped Nats front office staff prepare meals for Food & Friends on Monday. The dinners will be distributed by the group on Thanksgiving Day to people living with HIV/AIDS and other life-challenging illnesses.

Etc.

Congrats to Twins catcher Joe Mauer on his AL MVP award. It’s nice to see a No. 1 overall pick succeed.
