Wimbledon Rain Creates Tennis Bonanza Friday on ESPN2 & ESPN360.com

Rains here in Washington stopped the golf out the street at Congressional but the AT&T National (aka, The Tiger Woods Open) should have good weather with a few showers that might slow things down a bit over the weekend.

However that is nothing like what has been going on at Wimbledon….

The rains over the past week have driven the players and officals crazy. Meanwhile both ESPN2 and NBC will have action all the rest of the way starting in the morning. NBC will do afternoon’s Friday and of course Breakfastat Wimbledon on Saturday and Sunday.

Here is the latest from our pals at ESPN2…

Tomorrow’s Wimbledon coverage on ESPN2 and ESPN360.com will begin an hour early (6 a.m. – Noon ET) and will include extra matches – all four men’s quarterfinals and a women’s semifinal, compared to the original schedule of simply one men’s semifinal.  But that was before the rainiest fortnight in London since 1982 created such havoc.

The men’s action will see the conclusion of #1 and four-time defending champ Roger Federer vs. #20 Juan Carlos Ferrero (tied 5-5 in the first set), as well as #2 Rafael Nadal vs. #7 Tomas Berdych, #3 Andy Roddick vs. #12 Richard Gasquet, and #10 Marcos Baghdatis vs. #4 Novak Djokovic.  The women’s semifinal will see #1 Justine Henin, seeking a career Grand Slam with a win at Wimbledon, vs. #18 Marion Bartoli.  ESPN2 will have highlights of the other women’s semi, #6 Ana Ivanovic vs. #23 Venus Williams, on The Complete Wimbledon, to be aired for 2.5 hours late Friday at 12:30 a.m. (9:30 p.m. PT).

Friday will be the fifth consecutive day play at the All England Club will have started at 11 a.m. local time (6 a.m. ET), compared to the traditional noon (and 1 p.m. on Centre Court and Court One).  Accordingly, the ESPN2 coverage has begun at 6 a.m. all week, adding five hours to the already-impressive 123 to 128.
