Sister, brother sentenced to decades in prison for store murder

A brother and sister from the District were sentenced to decades in prison for the 2009 murder and robbery of a Northeast Washington store owner.

D.C. judge William M. Jackson sentenced 27-year-old Leon Robinson to 75 years in prison and Shanika Robinson to 54 years in the killing of Shahubbudin Rana, 44, owner of Pizza Mart at 2300 Fourth Street NE.

According to police, Shanika Robinson, 28, married Rana’s brother in 2008 to help him obtain a green card. In exchange, Rana was to pay her $2,000 a month. But Rana stopped paying Robinson after he learned that she was cheating on her husband.

On Aug. 18, 2009, the brother and sister and another man, Isiah Genus, robbed Rana at his store. The men stabbed and punched and beat Rana with a hammer, then set his body on fire.

Genus, 28, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy. He is to be sentenced Thursday.
