Stanley Cup sustains dent after revelry in Tampa boat parade

The Stanley Cup was dented Monday after Tampa Bay Lightning players carted it around during another boat parade celebration following the team’s second consecutive championship win.

Photographs showed warping on the bowl of the hockey trophy, though Phil Pritchard, the Hockey Hall of Fame’s keeper of the cup, seemed to be unbothered by the revelry. The silver chalice will be sent to Canada for repairs.

“All good, going in for a tuneup,” Pritchard said.

Dozens of residents jetted out to Tampa Bay to celebrate, while the cup was seen riding on a jet ski. Captain Steven Stamkos was seen wearing a T-shirt that read “BACK TO BOAT,” a reference to the team’s back-to-back championship victories.

The trophy has been damaged before, including in 2018 when the Washington Capitals attempted to do keg stands with the over 30-pound hunk of metal.

The Lightning on Wednesday defeated the Montreal Canadians 1-0 in game five of the finals. Its victory marked the second such win in professional sports for Florida in 2021 as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the Super Bowl in February.
