Former FBI Director James Comey’s advice to Democrats not to embrace the “socialist left” as a way to revolt against President Trump was met with swift reprisals Sunday on Twitter.
“Democrats, please, please don’t lose your minds and rush to the socialist left,” Comey tweeted in the late afternoon. “This president and his Republican Party are counting on you to do exactly that. America’s great middle wants sensible, balanced, ethical leadership.”

Many of the responders to Comey, a Republican who was fired as head of the FBI by Trump last year, were not enthused. Some of those who replied expressed continued dismay with his handling of the Hillary Clinton emails investigation, which Clinton and her allies have blamed, in part, for her 2016 election loss to Trump.
Hey @comey!
Talk to Mueller when summoned.
Otherwise shut the hell up.
You are not helping.
As you have demonstrated in the election and in the past few weeks, you have the WORST political antennae of literally anyone I’ve ever encountered.
That includes Reddit feeds. https://t.co/SvjpfdndkE

Who, at this point, is looking to James Comey for political advice? https://t.co/HTGDn6M5N9

Hey Jim, we got this covered. No one is asking for your advice. As we saw during the campaign, your judgment isn’t great! All the best, everyone.

Hey Jimmy, We talkin’ about the same sensible, balanced, ethical leadership that eroded our trust in gov’t, stole from the poor & middle-class to make the rich even wealthier, and helped to deliver Trump? Just askin’ for about 320 million Americans. BTW, can you spell hypocrisy?

James Comey giving election advice is as apropos as me offering advice on how to properly groom one’s balls.

We must stand united in #Resisting Hitler Trump.

“Comey” (v): to say absolutely nothing when it’s critical to speak up and not to be able to shut up it is completely inappropriate.
Example: There is literally no other example than Jim Comey.

Similarly, on Tuesday, Comey urged people to people to vote for Democrats in the November midterm elections if they “believe in this country’s values,” after which that tweet was met with backlash.
Brian Fallon, the press secretary for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign, flatly rejected Comey’s call, tweeting back: “Democrats don’t want your endorsement, but thanks.”
