McCain presses Pentagon for more information on U.S. sailors detained by Iran

Sen. John McCain said Wednesday he is preparing to resend his request to the Pentagon for more information on the sailors detained by Iran after getting no response to his initial ask.

The Arizona Republican this month said he would subpoena the 10 U.S. sailors detained by Iran in January if the Navy does not release the findings of its investigation by March 1.

Since his request on Feb. 15, McCain said he has heard nothing from the Pentagon.

“We’re going to renew our request at the end of this week and then see what their answer is,” he said.

The sailors were kept overnight by Iran last month after accidentally sailing two riverine boats into Iranian waters in the Persian Gulf. The Pentagon has released little information other than a timeline of events that describes some type of “navigational error.”

Following their release, Iran awarded medals to its forces who detained the sailors and released videos of the U.S. forces apologizing and crying.

When asked if the Pentagon would meet the March 1 deadline set by McCain, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said the investigation was in the Navy’s hands and couldn’t be rushed.

A Navy spokesman told the Washington Examiner last week that he could not give an exact timeline of when it would be completed.

“The incident is currently under investigation and it’s important that we let that process be done in a deliberate and thorough manner,” Cmdr. William Marks said. “We look forward to briefing congressional leadership once it is completed.”
