Nashville shooting: Audrey Hale was receiving treatment for ’emotional disorder,’ police confirm

Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief John Drake confirmed Tuesday that Audrey Hale, who shot and killed three students and three faculty members at the Covenant School, was receiving treatment from a doctor for an “emotional disorder.”

Drake also said Hale’s parents were unaware of the seven firearms that Hale had purchased legally, adding that the parents only knew of one weapon, which they thought Hale had sold.

“We’ve interviewed the parents of Audrey Hale, and we’ve determined that Audrey bought seven firearms from five different gun local stores here legally. They were legally purchased. Three of those weapons were used yesterday during the horrific tragedy that happened,” Drake said at a press conference.

“We know that they felt that she had one weapon and that she sold it,” Drake said. “She was under doctor’s care for an ’emotional disorder.’ Law enforcement knew nothing about the treatment she was receiving, but her parents felt that she should not own weapons.”

He continued, “They were under the impression that when she sold the one weapon, she did not own any more. As it turned out, she had been hiding several weapons within the house.”

The police chief also said that MNPD currently does not have a motive, but he did say the manifesto law enforcement found had “quite of a bit of writing to it.”

“So the manifesto, there’s several different writings about other locations. There was talks about the school, there was a map of the school, a drawing of how potentially she would enter and the assaults that would take place. It’s quite a bit of writing to it. I have not read the whole, entire manifesto. Our team and the FBI have been working on this,” Drake said.

He also added there were “some writings” about other locations but could not confirm if other locations had been a target. Drake also said none of the six people killed appeared to have been specifically targeted.
