Father arrested for shooting son over Thanksgiving argument on kneeling NFL players

A North Carolina man was arrested for shooting his son with a shotgun on Thanksgiving when an argument around kneeling NFL players escalated.

According to Raleigh’s News & Observer, 51-year-old Jorge Luis Valencia Lamadrid was taken into custody after police say he fired his shotgun and hit his son’s hand in the midst of an argument where patio furniture and other items were being thrown around. Lamadrid’s 21-year-old son, Estenban Marley Valencia, had allegedly been drinking excessively and was irate.

According to Cary, N.C., police, Lamadrid retrieved his shotgun and asked his intoxicated son to leave, who instead went out into the backyard and began to throw patio furniture at the house and struck Lamadrid in the face with a water bottle, which is when the shotgun was fired.

The family had just sat down for Thanksgiving dinner when the argument surrounding Colin Kaepernick and NFL players kneeling began between Valencia and Lamadrid’s other son, Felipe Miguel Valencia. Lamadrid told police that he had no intention to hurt Estenban, but was physically unable to stop his two sons from fighting and grabbed his shotgun to try and force the situation to de-escalate.

Lamadrid is facing one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
