Jindal says immigrants should assimilate, gay marriage is a no-go

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal doubled down on his Christian conservative message Sunday while suggesting that people immigrating to America should “assimilate.”

The Southern Republican insisted on ABC’s “This Week” that he would not change his views on gay marriage, among other issues, based on popular opinion.

“Many politicians are evolving on this issue based on the polls,” Jindal said of gay marriage rights before claiming his traditional views would never shift in a similar way.

Jindal was one of few possible 2016 candidates who did not attend the Iowa Freedom Summit, which drew dozens of White House hopefuls to Des Moines Saturday. The Louisiana conservative instead attended a prayer rally in Baton Rouge.

“We need a spiritual revival to fix what ails our country,” Jindal said Saturday.

Pressed about his comments on “This Week,” Jindal said George Washington, Harry Truman and Abraham Lincoln all “turned to God” for guidance during their presidencies.

Jindal also touched on immigration, a popular talking point among Republicans angling for a White House bid in the weeks since President Obama issued an executive order that could potentially spare millions of illegal immigrants from deportation.

“People coming into our country need to integrate, need to assimilate,” he said.
