D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray may have won the Democratic primary, but he knows he’s not the mayor-elect yet and said on Wednesday that he’ll spend the next seven weeks convincing everyone in the city he’s the right person for the job.
“There were lots of people who voted for me and there were lots of people who voted against me,” Gray said Wednesday during his first news conference following his victory in Tuesday’s primary. “Over the next seven weeks I’ll be reaching out to voters, especially those who didn’t vote for me.”
Gray said he’ll be holding town hall meetings across the city, hoping to engage Democrats, Republicans and independents alike.
“I believe everyone needs a voice,” he said, continuing to harp on his campaign message that drew a distinction between Gray’s inclusive image and Fenty’s abrasive character.
Gray said Fenty had called him Wednesday morning to congratulate him and offer a helping hand in the power transition.
“He pledged 100 percent support to helping make the transition smooth,” Gray said. “I’m looking forward to working with Mayor Fenty going forward.”
