Dozens of private employers and virtually every D.C. government agency will be looking for help during a major job fair next week.
The city-sponsored event, slated for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 22 at the WashingtonConvention Center, is expected to draw at least 10,000 job seekers, said Brender Gregory, director of the D.C. Department of Human Resources.
In addition to filling vacancies in the city’s 36,000-member work force, roughly 75 private employers representing most industries also will be looking for help.
The blend of high-paying and entry-level positions should lure a good cross section of area residents, Gregory said.
“Our technology jobs are a blend of white-collar and entry-level, whereas our transportation positions would be more blue-collar. We have a pretty good variety,” Gregory said. “We will have something for everyone.”
In all instances, Gregory said, city hiring officials will give preference to D.C. residents.
There’s a particular need, she said, for crossing guards in the Metropolitan Police Department, for traffic controllers and for other “high-turnover positions.”
The D.C. Department of Human Resources lists more than 150 government vacancies, from drivers, nurses and correctional officers to electrical technicians, structural engineers and public affairs specialists.
“There are pockets where there are a large number of employees we’re trying to recruit,” she said.
Private employers include universities, banks, hotels, museums, staffing companies, utilities, federal agencies, hospitals, supermarkets and retailers.
