Former Metro workers expected to plead guilty in theft case

Two former Metro workers accused of stealing thousands of dollars of coins from fare machines are expected to plead guilty today.

Horace McDade and John Haile both are charged with conspiracy to commit theft concerning programs receiving federal funds. Court records indicate they have a plea agreement hearing scheduled for this afternoon in federal court in Alexandria.

McDade was a revenue technician assigned to service Metro fare machines when they broke down, while Haile was a Metro police officer whose job included protecting revenue technicians, according to court papers.

They are accused of stealing riders’ coins since at least 2010.

Haile is believed to have purchased scratch-off lottery tickets with bags of coins, according to a Metro police officer’s affidavit. He is believed to have brought at least $28,000 in coins and cash to pay for tickets between October and December 2011. Lottery records indicated that Haile won at least $32,000 in 2011.
