Top liberal group’s leaders step down ahead of 2020 election

The leaders for a top liberal group are stepping down ahead of the 2020 election.

Anna Galland and Ilya Sheyman told NBC News they are leaving their positions running the nonprofit and political arms of MoveOn.org after six years in their respective roles.

The two want to step aside for new leaders, they said, but will stay on until the organization’s board finds new directors.

“Coming off a transformative election and in a moment where our organization is huge and healthy and in motion, it feels like the best time to get someone else set up to lead through the next two-year arc and beyond,” Galland said. “We’ll be MoveOn members for life.”

Sheyman said the liberal group’s work will become “more essential” after 2020.

MoveOn was founded in 1998 during former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment proceedings. During the 2016 election, it tried to recruit Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., to run for president as an alternative to Hillary Clinton. It ultimately backed Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., over Clinton.

The change in leadership follows calls from members of the liberal movement to have political leaders reflect the diversity of voters.

Democrats are expected to have a large pool of primary candidates ahead of 2020. A MoveOn straw poll in December showed former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D-Texas, leading the pack.
