Behind the rise of Trump

Victor Davis Hanson laid out the binary choice in the upcoming presidential election that has enabled Donald Trump to maintain support even among Republicans who find him an unpalatable choice for president.

The influential conservative thinker, in an interview with the Washington Examiner’s “Examining Politics” podcast, said that Trump was far from his first choice. But, said the Hoover Institution fellow, Trump is the better choice compared to Hillary Clinton.

Hanson’s endorsement is far from ringing, but all votes are counted equally — his possibly counts for more considering his megaphone. Hanson is a regular contributor to National Review and guest of talk radio programs around the country.

“While I don’t like Trump, and of the 16 candidates he was my sixteenth candidate, and I never quite envisioned that you’d have a choice [between] Hillary and him,” Hanson said. “I look at the positions in November, he’ll probably be more conservative than Hillary and I’ll probably vote for him.”

This week’s “Examining Politics” ventured outside the Beltway. The program also features an interview with Benjy Sarlin of NBC News, whose latest story, “The United States of Trump,” offers a fascinating window into the New York businessman’s rise and the voters that propelled him to the brink of the presidential nomination.
