It’s poor taste to be late to your own party, but apparently no one has delivered that memo to the president. The Washington Post crunched some numbers and discovered that in 2014, President Barack Obama has been late by more than 35 hours.
This number was found by comparing the time stamp on the prepared remarks posted to the White House website to the scheduled time of the address. The Post looked at every time-stamped speech given by Obama in 2014. To keep it fair, they excluded instances without a fixed starting time, such as when another figure spoke before Obama.
They discovered that the president had been a cumulative 2,121 minutes late in 2014. This works out to 35 hours and 21 minutes, and the year isn’t over yet. On average, Obama is 11 minutes late to speaking engagements.
Furthermore, reported the Post, “The president seems to have a particular problem with punctuality toward the middle of the week.” He is most often late on Wednesdays. As he was this Wednesday, when he kept reporters waiting over an hour for a press conference.
Does the president have time management problems or is he just fashionably late? Or is this just another sign that the president has simply given up on his job?
