For some members of Congress, the political drama “House of Cards” has become must-see TV.
Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) has “watched every minute of” the 13-part Netflix show released last month, she told POLITICO. Her assessment: “It’s highly entertaining fiction but not very realistic.”
“House of Cards” stars actor Kevin Spacey as House Majority Whip Francis Underwood (D-S.C.), who will stop at nothing — including an affair with a journalist — to advance his own career.
“The notion of any of our leadership team having sex with a reporter makes me laugh out loud,” McCaskill said. “And besides, everyone knows there is no decent barbecue in Washington.” In the show, Underwood loves the ribs at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that doesn’t actually exist in D.C.
But not everything in “House of Cards” is a stretch.
