Gingrich: Don’t be shocked if Trump rides into GOP convention ‘on an elephant’

Newt Gingrich told the Christian Broadcasting Network Monday that a Republican convention nominating Donald Trump would be filled with unpredictability — and maybe an elephant.

“He is a great showman,” Gingrich told host David Brody. “We have no idea what a Donald Trump convention will be like. I would not be shocked to see him ride in on Thursday night on an elephant. Who knows?”

Trump has said that he wants more “showbiz” at this July’s convention, pointing to the need to keep people from falling “asleep.” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus is all for it, but has cited the financial constraints that could hamper some potential pizazz at the convention.

Despite the mystery of how Trump plans to inject some showbiz into the convention, his affection for elephants is well known. In March 2015, the presumptive nominee vowed that he would never go to the circus again after Ringling Brothers began phasing elephants out of the show. He also lamented in January that the circus “will never be the same” because of the decision.

As for Gingrich, the former speaker has been one of Trump’s more vocal supporters. However, the two ended up on opposing sides after Trump attacked Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is presiding over the pending case involving Trump University.

Gingrich called the attack “one of the worst mistakes” Trump has made thus far in his campaign, with the presumptive nominee firing back Monday morning, arguing that Gingrich’s comments were “inappropriate.”
