The summer closed on a grim note during the weekend, with at least four more people killed in violent encounters in the District of Columbia, police reported.

Shortly after midnight Saturday, police were called to the 300 block of Kentucky Avenue SE, where they found a 33-year-old man lying on the ground, suffering from stab wounds.

Three hours later, police found the gunshot-riddled body of Terry Baltimore, 41, in his home in the 5000 block of Hanna Place, SE.

Just before 11 a.m. Saturday, police came to what they thought was the scene of a car accident. Inside a car that had crashed into a retaining wall, they found the body of an unidentified man who had been stabbed to death.

A boy was the last known casualty of D.C.’s streets, police said.

Airrion Johnson, 16, of Clinton, Md., died after being shot in a struggle for a handgun. A 15-year-old girl was taken into custody in Johnson’s slaying.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier has promised to stay ahead of crime trends in the District, but despite being given a large new budget and the authority to hire thousands more officers, Lanier and her team have struggled to stem the violence.

Going into Labor Day weekend — the traditional end of the summer — D.C. was home to 126 homicides, nine more than last year at the same time.
