Hillary Clinton just can’t help herself. Every time the opportunity presents itself, she returns to the widely debunked theory that President Trump is beholden to Russia — even though the federal government spent several years and tens of millions of dollars on an investigation that proved this allegation to be false.
But now Clinton wants another investigation — this time into whether Trump was working with Russia to plan the Capitol riot on Jan. 6.
“I hope, historically, we will find out who [Trump is] beholden to, who pulls his string,” she said to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, recommending that Congress establish an independent commission to investigate the matter. “I would love to see his phone records to see whether he was talking to [Russian President Vladimir] Putin the day that the insurgents invaded our Capitol.”
.@SpeakerPelosi and I agree:
Congress needs to establish an investigative body like the 9/11 Commission to determine Trump’s ties to Putin so we can repair the damage to our national security and prevent a puppet from occupying the presidency ever again. pic.twitter.com/yR7LQmXm5Z

Pelosi’s office later distanced itself from Clinton’s comments and said the speaker would only support establishing a 9/11-style commission to investigate the events surrounding the Capitol riot — not Trump’s alleged ties to Putin. But Pelosi, who is quite the fan of Russian-collusion conspiracies herself, had no problem entertaining Clinton’s suggestion during their interview.
“To your point of who was he beholden to,” Pelosi told Clinton, “as I said to him in that picture with my blue suit, as I was leaving, what I was saying to him as I was pointing, rudely, at him: ‘With you, Mr. President, all roads lead to Putin.’ I don’t know what Putin has on him politically, financially, or personally. But what happened last week was a gift to Putin, because Putin wants to undermine democracy in our country and throughout the world.”
The reason Clinton, Pelosi, and so many other Democrats are obsessed with the Russian collusion theory is that it absolves them of any responsibility for their 2016 losses. Better to blame Trump’s victory on a debunked conspiracy theory than admit voters preferred an inexperienced, foul-mouthed businessman to the Democratic establishment candidate.
But there is no evidence at all to support Clinton’s conspiracy. The House, Senate, and an independent special counsel all took turns investigating Trump and Russia, but none could find evidence that collusion ever took place. However, later investigations did find that Democrats behaved dubiously throughout the entire investigation. Clinton herself helped fund the Steele dossier, an egregious load of balderdash that the intelligence community used to justify their investigation into Trump in the first place.
One would think Democrats might finally want to put this theory to rest after being proven wrong over and over again. But that would require them to acknowledge their own failures. Fat chance of that.
