An MS-13 arrest reminds us to judge cops fairly

Where police officers fall short, they should be held accountable. But officers should also be recognized in their honorable enforcement of law. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.

Sadly, it’s a common misunderstanding that police officers regularly use excessive force. The opposite is in fact true. As an example, consider the newly released video of what occurred on Jan. 31 2019, when officers arrested MS-13 member Jesus Negrete-Sanchez in Washington state.

Apparently refusing to stop for officers and suspected of assaulting his mother, Negrete-Sanchez proved two things: that MS-13 members are hyper-aggressive idiots, and that many police officers have a heroic sense of patience.

Absurdly seeking to break free of four police officers, Negrete-Sanchez didn’t just resist arrest, he did so with some very unpleasant insults. He started off by calling the officers “f—ing rats” and “f—ing bitches,” but soon thereafter Negrete-Sanchez escalated. “You guys f—ing going to die rats, you f—ing bitches … all your f—ing kids, all your f—ing families are going to get killed.” As officers quite calmly attempt to control the MS-13er, Negrete-Sanchez continued spitting out, “I’m going to f—ing kill you when I f—ing get out.” As the MS-13 member continued fighting, the officers then threatened to taze him. This apparently calmed him down somewhat.

Regardless, the video presents body camera evidence of the type that is most abundant but also most ignored: police officers dealing professionally with rather difficult individuals. And that they do so with far more patience than most of us might be able to muster.
