Susan Brooks jumps into race to replace Pence

Indiana Rep. Susan Brooks has withdrawn from her congressional re-election bid to compete for the gubernatorial position left open by Gov. Mike Pence, who exited the governor’s race Friday in order to join Donald Trump’s presidential ticket.

Brooks, who was a member of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, will join Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb and Rep. Todd Rokita in the race for Indiana’s highest office, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Trump had been slated to unveil his vice presidential pick at an event in New York City Friday morning, but canceled the appearance following a gruesome terror attack in France late Thursday evening. He instead announced the selection of Pence on Twitter.

Former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels has already ruled out the possibility of running for Pence’s seat. Brooks wasted little time Friday when she reportedly moved to file paperwork for a gubernatorial bid within minutes of Pence’s formal withdrawal.
