If more people are working and more people are paying taxes and it’s a fairer system that gets more taxes paid instead of avoided, that’s tax reform and not an increase. Grover has always made that distinction and I think most reasonable people have.”
– Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Tex., appearing on MSNBC’s “The Daily Rundown” Friday morning to talk about the debt debate. Hutchison — who has signed Grover Norquist‘s anti-tax pledge — was one of several lawmakers to echo the position that Norquist took Thursday when he said that letting the Bush tax cuts expire would not be the same as a tax increase. But Norquist — who is president of Americans for Tax Reform — may have spoken too soon. ATR walked back Grover’s statements later that day.
