A Maryland postal worker is accused of stealing gift cards from the office where she worked.

Zelda Toye, a rural carrier associate at the postal service’s Waldorf Annex, allegedly took Walmart gift cards from the “undeliverable bulk business mail” container at the annex to give to her mother, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court in Greenbelt.

Last November, Walmart sent a mass mailing of $5 gift cards to people in the Waldorf area, the complaint says. Authorities became suspicious when the same phone number was used to activate multiple gift cards, and linked that phone number to Toye.

The complaint doesn’t say how many gift card she’s accused of taking.

In March, investigators prepared three “test” mailings with Target gift cards to see whether Toye would handle them properly. The complaint says the cards were addressed to vacant lots and should have been placed in the undeliverable mail container, but store surveillance captured Toye redeeming the cards.
