Poll: Clinton’s lead over Trump grows to double digits

Hillary Clinton’s lead over Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential race has grown to double digits, according to a new poll.

Clinton now leads Trump by 10 points — 51 percent to 41 percent — among American adults who say they are registered to vote in the new NBC News/Survey Monkey poll released Tuesday.

This is a 2-point gain since her 8-point lead last week, and her biggest lead since the poll first asked about the Clinton-Trump matchup in early May.

In a four-way matchup, Clinton’s lead shrinks to 6 points, leading Trump 44 percent to 38 percent. In that matchup, Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson has 10 percent and Green Party candidate Jill Stein is at 4 percent.

Clinton’s gain can be attributed to Trump losing support among men. Two weeks ago, Trump had a 16-point margin over Clinton among men — that is now down to just 5 points. Meanwhile, Clinton’s support among women has widened, moving from a 14-point margin over the GOP nominee two weeks ago to a 24-point lead now.

The poll also shows that Trump has slipped among white evangelicals, voters without college degrees and white men — all voter blocs in which Clinton has gained support.

The latest poll of 11,480 adults who say they are registered to vote was conducted via online interviews Aug. 1-7. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.2 percentage points.
