D.C. police shoot, kill dog

A D.C. police officer shot and killed a dog that attacked him while the officer searched a home for drugs, police said.

The officer was serving a search warrant in a home in 1300 block of Fifth Street NW at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, when he came across what was believed to be a pit bull mix, said Lt. Nicholas Breul. The dog attacked and bit the officer, who fired and killed the dog, police said.



Chemical causes car explosion

A leaky chemical tank in a car caused an explosion at a parking garage in Hyattsville Tuesday, authorities said.

An air conditioner repairman had the acetylene tank in his car, a Prince George’s fire department spokesman said. As the man tried to electronically roll the window down to air out the gas smell, the explosion went off.

The man panicked and ran away, and authorities spent hours investigating the scene they initially described as suspicious. No charges are expected.

Bank exec pleads guilty

A former executive at United Bank has pleaded guilty to helping a Virginia steakhouse owner commit a $17.6 million fraud against the bank.

Sissaye Gezachew, an assistant vice president at United Bank, admitted in federal court in Alexandria on Wednesday, that he helped Osama El-Atari defraud the bank. In return, El-Atari paid Gezachew $150,000.

El-Atari has pleaded guilty to defrauding several banks out of $53 millions.
