President Joe Biden rued not being able to recreate former President Donald Trump’s viral moment behind the wheel of a stationary truck parked on the White House South Lawn on Monday.
“I thought I was gonna get to drive one of these suckers today,” Biden told the crowd, referring to the 18-wheeler behind him.

Biden repeated a disputed claim that he used to operate a similar vehicle during a ceremony held to tout 90 days since he launched his trucking plan. During his speech, he also recounted his first encounter with a female driver, a woman called “Big Mama,” during a strike when he was a Delaware senator.
Appearing alongside Biden, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said the trucking industry is a national priority, including improving training and employment standards.
Quoting a driver who told him “infrastructure is our workplace,” the secretary and Biden’s former presidential rival underscored the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure deal signed into law last year.
Biden and Buttigieg spoke of the plan as a twofer to bolster supply chains and create “better-quality trucking jobs,” including encouraging more veterans and women to join the industry.

The White House event was reminiscent of a 2017 American Trucking Associations gathering hosted by Trump. Trump was photographed in the cab of an 18-wheeler Mack honking the horn and pretending to drive before a listening session with executives and their employees on healthcare.
