House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a year-round solicitor of donations for the Democratic National Committee (DNC), said late Wednesday neither party’s private committee should play a role in helping candidates win the primaries.
“I don’t think the DNC or the RNC or any ‘NC’ should have any role in the primary,” Pelosi told Fox News host Greta Van Susteren, responding to a question about the DNC’s colluding with Hillary Clinton.
But the California Democrat — and friend of the Democratic nominee — said the 20,000 emails hackers stole from the party, which WikiLeaks released to the public last week, were a non-issue, even among Bernie Sanders’ supporters whom she claimed are now rallying behind Clinton.
“I think that they are not a monolith,” Pelosi said about the content of the emails. “I think that Senator Sanders’ presentation … did a great deal to bring people together. It’s hard to bring people over just like that and I think it will take some time.”
Van Susteren pushed Pelosi, mentioning Vice President Joe Biden as an example of another Democrat who had eyed the presidential race, but knew — as the emails indicate — outgoing DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz was working to help ensure Clinton’s primary election.
“I don’t think they would have made the difference in the election,” Pelosi said. “I sympathize with the concerns that they have. Debbie — Congresswoman Wasserman Schultz — has stepped down. We go forward now. I don’t think that even Bernie Sanders is saying but for those emails he would be the nominee for president.”
