Texas Sen. Ted Cruz found President Obama’s final State of the Union speech entirely underwhelming.
In an interview on NBC shortly after the speech, Cruz delivered a response from the campaign trail.
“I think the speech tonight surprised nobody, it was more of the same,” Cruz said. “It was sadly, I think it was less a State of the Union than it was a state of denial. President Obama demonstrated just how out of touch he is.”
Cruz continued to say that Obama’s speech did not reflect the reality he witnessed on the trail in Iowa, after initially mistakenly naming Ohio.
When NBC News personality Lester Holt asked Cruz about Donald Trump’s decision to raise the issue of Cruz’s birthplace as an impediment to the presidency, Cruz swung at Trump.
“I will note Mr. Trump is relying on ultra-left-wing liberal law professors at Harvard to make this argument and the same professors he’s relying on are major supporters for Hillary Clinton,” Cruz said. “Some folks are asking, ‘Gosh, why is it that Hillary Clinton’s supporters are echoing Donald Trump’s attacks?'”
Cruz argued that polls show Trump losing to Hillary Clinton in hypothetical head-to-head matchups, while Cruz is winning against Clinton. Trump ranks first in the Washington Examiner‘s newest GOP presidential power rankings. Cruz ranks second.
