APPLE’S NEWEST RELEASE TO ITS IPHONE AND IPAD OPERATING SYSTEM IS DRAWING THE WRATH OF CONSUMERS OVER THE REPLACEMENT OF THE POPULAR GOOGLE MAPS SOFTWARE WITH APPLE’S OWN APPLICATION.
[SOT/:Peter Svensson, AP Technology Writer]
“We’re seeing a lot of complaints from people who have updated to the Apple app and saying that it doesn’t find the right addresses and things like that. So, right now it’s mostly a downside you also don’t get Street view in the Apple app.”
SOME EARLY UPGRADERS ARE REPORTING THAT THE MAPS PRODUCED BY THE NEW APPLICATION LEAVE OUT INFORMATION THEY’D GET FROM GOOGLE MAPS AND MISPLACES POINTS OF INTEREST.
BUT NOT EVERYONE IS UP IN ARMS OVER THE NEW MAPPING APP.

“Great thing. Google maps is a freaking nightmare. I don’t know what Google did. At first Google Maps was great and then they just dropped the ball.
[Notes:SOT: Eduardo Garcia, iPhone user:]”I love it as a matter of fact. I love this upgrade. I think it was a very smart upgrade. I didn’t like Google Maps, you know the application that was before. To me, it was obsolete.”
THE SWITCH TO AN APPLE-BRANDED MAPPING SOLUTION WAS YEARS IN THE MAKING, AS APPLE HAS SEEN INCREASED COMPETITION FROM GOOGLE’S ANDROID-BASED PHONES.
[SOT/:Peter Svensson, AP Technology Writer]
“I think the background here is that Apple and Google are locked in a blood feud over phones basically. Apple sees its main competitor as being phones that run Google’s Android software and it’s natural for it not to want to have this crucial application on its iPhone supplied by Google.”
THE UPROAR COMES JUST HOURS BEFORE APPLE IS SCHEDULED TO RELEASE THE NEW IPHONE5, ITS FLAGSHIP PRODUCT.
THE NEW iPHONE COMES WITH THE MAPPING SOFTWARE PRE-INSTALLED. SO THE OPTION TO KEEP GOOGLE’S MAPPING SOFTWARE WILL ONLY EXIST FOR THOSE WHO CHOOSE NOT TO UPGRADE TO THE LATEST HARDWARE.
