Paul Ryan: Barcelona terrorist attack is ‘pure evil’

House Speaker Paul Ryan said the terrorist attack in Barcelona’s La Ramblas tourist district Thursday is “pure evil.”

“Pure evil in #Barcelona. We stand with the people of Spain, and send our prayers to the victims of this horrible terrorist attack,” Ryan, R-Wis., tweeted Thursday afternoon.

Former President Barack Obama issued a joint statement with his wife, Michelle.

“Michelle and I are thinking of the victims and their families in Barcelona. Americans will always stand with our Spanish friends. Un abrazo,” Obama tweeted.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was seriously wounded when a man opened fire on Republicans at a baseball practice in June, also criticized the attack.

“Jennifer and I are praying for those killed and injured in the terrorist attack in Barcelona. This evil has no place in our world,” Scalise tweeted.

Several people are reported dead and dozens were injured after a person operating a white van drove it onto the sidewalk and plowed down pedestrians in the historic Las Ramblas district of Barcelona.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her thoughts are with those suffering from the attack.

GOP Sens. Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida blasted the perpetrators behind the incident.

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., and Rep. Joe Crowley, D-N.Y., also expressed their condolences and support for Spain.

Catalan police confirmed around 7 p.m. local time, “Terrorist attack confirmed. The terrorist attack protocol has been activated.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said city officials are closely monitoring the situation.
